James Anderson Company has been providing quality ecological consulting services in northern Illinois and beyond since 2007. We offer the following ecological consulting services:
- Wetland services including wetland delineations, project permitting, and mitigation design
- Soil erosion and sediment control services, including design, implementation, and inspection of soil erosion and sediment control Best Management Practices (BMP)
- Threatened/endangered species consultation
- Arborist services, including tree inventories, tree risk assessments, tree protection and planting plans
- Habitat assessment – enhancement, creation, and monitoring of native landscapes
- Water quality monitoring
- Hydrologic modeling
In our work, we strive to maintain a spirit of respect and reverence for the land and water, appreciating the complex interplay of biological, sociological, economic, and historical forces. We are also pragmatic, recognizing that careful ecological planning can reduce the cost of crisis management, minimize liabilities, improve regulatory compliance, preserve the natural environment, and help clients and communities achieve their sustainability goals.
Our ecological consulting services complement the civil engineering, surveying, stormwater management, and construction services we also offer at James Anderson Company. Our wide array of capabilities sets us apart as we can deliver comprehensive solutions for many types of complex ecological concerns. |
While James Anderson Company is small in size and regional in scope, our long history of working in the local area affords us an expertise other larger companies may not be able to match. Having provided surveying and engineering services for over 100 years and construction and ecological consulting services for the better part of two decades, we have developed a deep understanding of both the natural and built environment in northern Illinois.
"If size mattered, then the elephant would be king of the jungle."

SERVICES
Wetland Services
Our wetland services include:
Soil Erosion and Sediment Control Services
James Anderson Company's experienced professionals design, implement and monitor soil erosion and sediment control according to Best Management Practices (BMPs). Our inspectors are certified through Lake County's DECI program and are qualified to ensure that your project complies with local, state, and federal standards for soil erosion and sediment control. Services include:
Streambank and Shoreline Protection and Stabilization
Streambank erosion is a common problem throughout Illinois that can lead to degraded water quality, destabilized structures, and increased flood risks. James Anderson Company provides a full range of streambank stabilization services, including site assessment, design, and implementation of Best Management Practices. Although we prefer to use soft stabilization methods such as grading, installing coir rolls and tree revetments, we will also employ hard bank stabilization when necessary, including rip-rap, gabion baskets, retaining walls, ajax etc. Regardless of the strategy we use, we always strive to "listen" to the site and incorporate vegetation to the greatest extent possible. When stabilizing a site, we select native plant material, amplifying high-quality species that already exist on-site or introducing quality associates of existing species. |
We are particularly proud of the many projects we have undertaken on behalf of the three forks of the north branch of the Chicago River. For well over a century, we have worked with the Districts to ensure that water flows unimpeded through the drainage channels while at the same time ensuring proper ecological methods to preserve the stream banks. Projects include periodic clearing of excessive woody vegetation, flattening of ditch banks, as well as installation and management of appropriate native vegetation, and in some cases, installation of riffles, bunkers, and other structures that may benefit aquatic life. Over the years, we have become increasingly aware of the potential for these ditches to contribute to the region's ecological integrity and, as such, have striven to create and enhance habitat for fish and wildlife wherever possible. We have helped the Districts obtain EPA water quality grants and have been recognized by the Lake County Storm Water Management Commission for our efforts.
Arborist Services
Our professional arborist provides developers, homeowners, and municipalities with species inventories, tree risk assessments, tree planting and protection, as well as removal plans.

Water Quality Monitoring
JACO has been actively monitoring water quality for drainage and sanitary districts in northern Lake County for many years. We have been sampling and reporting on surface water quality for the North Branch Drainage Districts since the late 1990’s. Our familiarity and long history of working in the area enable us to serve as the "eyes and ears" for the districts, allowing us to alert them quickly when water quality issues arise. We have established relationships with analytical laboratories to ensure accurate testing, and we have the expertise to provide meaningful interpretations of these test results. JACO also has a long history of working with Glenbrook Sanitary District to monitor potable (drinking) water quality in the community. We have been taking monthly water samples, reading water meters, and providing billing services for residences and businesses in the Glenbrook area for over 40 years. |
Hydrologic modeling
James Anderson Company has provided hydrologic modeling since 1976, and we have a long track record of successfully working with developers, engineers, and regulators to optimize water management in sensitive or unstable hydrological settings. We developed our hydrologic modeling processes to address concerns and threats related to managing surface water, soil water, wetland, and groundwater.
We work closely with our clients to understand critical water and flood management issues, and we craft comprehensive plans to mitigate against flooding and other development and operational risks. Our hydrologic specialists pull from a team of experts to design and implement cost-effective water management measures in compliance with best practices and local regulatory requirements. Our in-house surveyors and wetland experts offer clients holistic, single-source solutions to their hydrologic modeling needs. We provide the following services:
